What We Know About The Tragic Krakow Market Square Shooting

Mass violence rarely shatters the historic heart of Poland's cultural capital, but that's exactly what happened when a lone gunman opened fire in Krakow's Main Market Square. Six people lost their lives and more than a dozen others sustained injuries during the Saturday afternoon attack, leaving a nation grieving and scrambling for answers.

The incident unfolded just after three in the afternoon on November 7, 2026. A 25-year-old Polish citizen drove a vehicle into the crowded, pedestrian-heavy square wearing tactical military gear. Armed with an AR-15-style rifle, he fired indiscriminately into the crowds of tourists and locals who frequent the famous destination.

The Attack and Immediate Aftermath

The chaos began when a black Subaru entered the square from Sławkowska Street. Eyewitnesses reported hearing automatic gunfire echo across the cobblestones for over a minute. A tram passing near the area took direct fire, shattering the driver's cabin window, though the driver escaped unhurt.

Police pursued the vehicle as it fled south along Grodzka Street. Approximately one kilometer away from the square, officers caught up with the suspect. A violent shootout ensued, leaving two police officers wounded before officers successfully incapacitated and arrested the gunman.

Victims and Casualties

The human toll of the rampage is devastating. Four women and two men were killed at the scene. Authorities confirmed that the victims included Polish citizens as well as a British national, highlighting how international tourists were caught in the path of the violence.

More than fifteen people suffered injuries, ranging from severe gunshot wounds to trauma sustained during the panic. Emergency services scrambled air ambulances to the square while local hospitals mobilized to handle the influx of trauma patients.

The Investigation and Wider Shockwaves

Polish interior minister Marcin Kierwiński stated that preliminary investigations indicate the perpetrator held radical, ultra-nationalistic views and showed a deep fascination with far-right ideologies.

The tragedy deepened when Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that police searching the suspect's home in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski discovered three more bodies—identified as the gunman's mother, father, and sister.

In response to the tragedy, Krakow Mayor Łukasz Gibała declared a period of mourning lasting through November 11. Meanwhile, major cities like Warsaw and Wrocław have ramped up urban security measures. The Polish government has announced national days of mourning to honor the victims of an attack that has fundamentally shaken a country unaccustomed to such horrific public violence.
