Marine biologists spend decades documenting how plastic debris suffocates whales and chokes marine life, usually from behind a desk or inside an academic journal. Lyne Morissette grew tired of that routine. Watching the St. Lawrence River fill up with trash while scientists offered the same passive warnings broke her patience.
So she stopped writing papers about it and started hauling garbage out of the water.
Right now, Morissette and a rotating crew of scientists, professional divers, and local volunteers are driving across Quebec for a grueling 16-day shoreline cleanup spanning 2,000 kilometres. It is called L'Expédition Saint-Laurent, organized alongside Stratégie Saint-Laurent, and it is changing how local communities look at their own waterways.
The Reality Behind Mission 1000 Tonnes
Most environmental campaigns rely on abstract metrics that mean nothing to everyday people. This one started eight years ago with a hyper-specific target: haul 10 tonnes of waste out of the St. Lawrence River and surrounding seaways.
They blew past that target immediately. The initiative scaled up into what is now known as Mission 1000 tonnes. Today, the organization sits at roughly 749 tonnes of collected trash, marching hard toward their namesake goal.
Hitting those numbers takes dirty work. The current 16-day blitz stops everywhere from Greater Montreal and Quebec City to remote spots like Baie-Comeau and the Innu community of Pessamit on the North Shore. Volunteers don't just grab garbage and throw it away. Every single item gets sorted, counted, and documented.
Tracking Regional Trash Signatures
Why bother cataloging every single coffee cup or plastic bag? Because trash tells a story.
Morissette, who splits her time running these expeditions and teaching ocean sciences at the Université du Québec à Rimouski's Institut des sciences de la mer, points out that different regions leave distinct waste patterns. Urban centers dump heavy amounts of single-use food packaging and cigarette butts. Industrial areas leave different footprints.
Mapping these regional trash signatures helps researchers understand how pollution travels and accumulates. It turns a simple cleanup into hard scientific data.
Of course, fieldwork brings bizarre surprises. Teams have pulled everything from ordinary construction debris to objects that require immediate emergency intervention. During one past cleanup, a volunteer hauled up what looked terrifyingly like a firearm. Police had to secure the site before experts realized it was just an old starting gun from a rowing competition. Strict safety protocols exist for a reason. You never quite know what lies beneath the surface of North America's busiest industrial shipping corridors.
The Microplastic Threat Lurking Below
While visible trash piles make for striking photos, the invisible threat worries scientists more.
Studies from McGill University highlight that the St. Lawrence River suffers from microplastic contamination levels that rival the most heavily polluted marine sediments on Earth. Concentrations match those found near densely populated urban zones in places like China.
That is why the current expedition includes dedicated microplastic sampling alongside traditional beach sweeps. When tires wear down on asphalt, synthetic clothing sheds in washing machines, and larger plastics break down under UV light, they turn into toxic particles that infiltrate the food web from the bottom up.
Moving Past Climate Despair
Eco-anxiety paralyzes people. When the news cycles constantly highlight rising ocean temperatures, receding ice caps, and crashing biodiversity, individuals figure their small choices do not matter.
Morissette rejects that defeatism. She admits that pulling massive mounds of rotting garbage out of a river triggers complex feelings. It feels amazing to clear the shoreline, but heartbreaking to realize how much filth accumulated in the first place.
Even so, hope beats despair every time.
You do not need to drop everything and join a 2,000-kilometre expedition to make a dent. Real environmental stewardship starts with micro-habits. Spending five minutes picking up stray plastics during a neighborhood walk adds up when thousands of people do it.
The 16-day blitz wraps up on August 21, but the campaign will not stop once it hits the 1,000-tonne milestone. The infrastructure is shifting into a permanent conservation network.
