  • Using random chargers that pump too much current into cells not built to handle it.
  • Tampering with internal wiring to squeeze out extra speed or longer range.

People think modifying an e-bike battery is a harmless DIY project. It is not. You are basically strapping a small, unstable chemical bomb to your ride.

Take what happened at George and Dundas streets. A fourth-floor apartment became a disaster zone when multiple e-bike batteries overheated. One panicked resident threw a burning pack into a bathtub, which did nothing to stop the chemical reaction. Paramedics treated four people on-site, and someone ended up in the hospital.

It is not just e-bikes causing headaches, either. Municipal recycling facilities are dealing with fires sparked by hidden devices like discarded smartphones, vapes, and electric toothbrushes tossed into regular blue bins. When heavy compaction machinery crushes these items, they short-circuit and ignite.

How to Keep Your Home Safe

You do not need to throw away every gadget you own. You just need to stop treating lithium-ion cells like standard alkaline double-As.

Stop buying uncertified knock-off chargers online. If you own an e-bike or scooter, use the manufacturer-approved charging brick. Yes, original parts cost more. Replacing a burned-down apartment costs infinitely more.

Watch for the warning signs. If your device starts smelling like hot plastic, emits strange smoke, or feels unusually hot to the touch, unplug it immediately.
