Stop Planning Your Drive To Santa Monicas New Ocean Way Festival

If you're already picturing yourself cruising down Pacific Coast Highway, wind in your hair, parking your car right by the sand for Goldenvoice's newly announced Ocean Way Festival, I have some bad news.

Do not do it. Seriously. Put the car keys down.

The promoters behind Coachella are launching a massive, 35,000-capacity beach festival in Santa Monica on September 26 and 27, 2026. It features a stellar lineup topped by The Killers, British soul sensation Olivia Dean, and rock icon Jack White. It's the first time in decades that the city's iconic shoreline will host a music event of this scale.

But here is the catch. The organizers are making it explicitly clear that there will be zero on-site parking. If you try to drive and park near the pier, you'll end up trapped in a legendary Westside traffic nightmare, missing the music entirely while staring at brake lights.

This isn't just another corporate music festival announcement. It's a massive experiment in urban transit, a celebration of Southern California's rich musical history, and a major test for Santa Monica's brand-new beachfront district. Here's what you actually need to know about the lineup, the ticket prices, and how to navigate the logistical puzzle of getting to the sand.

Why Santa Monica is betting big on the beach

For a long time, Santa Monica has had a somewhat quiet relationship with live music. Sure, the legendary Twilight Concert Series on the pier drew massive crowds for years, but that era ended over a decade ago. Since the historic Santa Monica Civic Auditorium went dark, the city hasn't really had a true musical anchor.

Ocean Way Festival changes that.

This event is the crown jewel of Santa Monica's ambitious, $60 million civic Realignment Plan. The city is trying to revitalize its beachfront, designating a new zone called "The Sandbox on the Beach". This district is meant to host massive cultural events over the next few years, including activations for the FIFA World Cup 2026, the Super Bowl, and the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Goldenvoice, which is owned by AEG Presents, won a highly competitive bidding process to run this festival. If everything goes off without a hitch, they already have plans locked in to bring Ocean Way back in 2027 and 2028.

The name itself is a tribute to local history. It's named after Ocean Way, the actual street where audio engineer Allen Sides opened the legendary Ocean Way Recording studios back in the day. For Goldenvoice, this is also a bit of a sentimental homecoming. In the late 1970s and early '80s, the promoter was booking raw, historic punk shows at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, just blocks away from where this new festival will sit.

The lineup is a brilliant mix of indie rock and modern soul

Goldenvoice didn't just throw a bunch of random radio hitmakers onto the bill. They booked a highly specific, sun-drenched vibe that fits the Santa Monica coast.

The festival is split across two stages and two days.

The Saturday lineup leans heavily into guitar-driven indie and classic alternative rock. The Killers are headlining, fresh off frontman Brandon Flowers releasing his third solo album. Joining them is Jack White, whose live shows are famously unpredictable, alongside beloved indie darlings Alvvays and a resurrected Sublime.

Sunday shifts the energy into something much smoother and soul-centric. Olivia Dean, who took home the Best New Artist trophy at the Grammys earlier this year, is headlining Sunday's bill. It's a huge moment for her as she wraps up her highly anticipated, sold-out "The Art of Loving" tour. Sharing Sunday's stage are the psych-rock trio Khruangbin, retro-soul outfits like Durand Jones & The Indications, and the incredibly talented Hiatus Kaiyote.

If you're more into electronic beats, the festival has you covered on both days with a solid roster of DJs, including Hot Chip, Poolside, BLOND:ISH, and the legendary DJ Harvey.

The transit survival plan

Let's get back to the most important detail of this entire event, which is how on earth you're going to get there.

The festival site stretches across the sand between the Santa Monica Pier and Bay Street. The main entrance is located at Bay Street, and the main stage will sit right at the base of the pier, facing south.

Because the city and Goldenvoice are prioritizing a transit-first approach, they are actively blocking cars from the immediate area. The beach parking lot closest to the venue is being entirely converted into a massive bike and scooter valet. The parking lot on the other side of Ocean Park Boulevard is reserved strictly for rideshares and official event shuttles.

If you absolutely insist on driving, your only option is to use one of four designated inland parking lots. These lots are miles away from the beach, and parking there will cost you a whopping $60 per day. From there, you'll have to board a shuttle just to reach the festival gates.

Don't do that to yourself. It's expensive, time-consuming, and annoying.

Instead, take the train. LA Metro's E Line terminates at the Downtown Santa Monica station. The station is less than a mile from the main entrance at Bay Street. It's a flat, scenic walk, and it will save you $120 in parking fees over the weekend. If you live on the Westside, riding a bike, taking an electric scooter, or hopping on Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus is a total no-brainer.

Ticket prices and premium options

If you want to go, you'll need to act quickly. Tickets are going to sell fast, especially with local residents getting an early head start.

The local presale for Santa Monica residents starts on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at 11:00 AM PT. The general public sale opens the following day, Thursday, July 23, 2026, at 11:00 AM PT.

Here's a breakdown of the pricing tiers you can choose from:

  • Single-Day General Admission: $229 to $269
  • Two-Day General Admission: $399 to $459
  • Single-Day Premium Pit: $449 to $499
  • Two-Day Premium Pit: $749 to $799

The standard GA ticket gives you access to the beach, both music stages, shaded seating structures, and food from a curated lineup of local Westside restaurants. If you want to get right up front near the main stage, you'll need to shell out for the Premium Pit pass, which also gets you nicer, flushable restrooms and an elevated viewing deck.

If you have a massive budget and want to experience this in total luxury, Goldenvoice has partnered with Proper Hospitality to create the Proper Beach Club. This is a high-end beachfront lounge designed by the famous Kelly Wearstler Studio. These packages, which include hotel stays at the stunning Santa Monica Proper Hotel, cost several thousand dollars and are already on sale.

Practical tips for a festival on the sand

Going to a music festival on a concrete racetrack or a grassy polo field is one thing. Spending two full days on the sand is a completely different beast.

First, think about your footwear. Do not wear heavy boots or expensive sneakers that you care about. Sandals, slides, or old sneakers you don't mind getting completely filled with saltwater and sand are your best bet.

Second, the festival layout is designed to mirror a casual day at the beach. There are designated standing-only areas right in front of the stages, but there are also open, sandy spaces where you're allowed to roll out a beach towel and lounge. Bring a lightweight, compact beach towel or a tapestry that you can easily stuff into a small bag.

Third, prepare for the Santa Monica microclimate. It might be a blazing hot 85 degrees at 2:00 PM when you're dancing in the sun, but once the sun dips below the horizon, the ocean breeze kicks in and the temperature will plummet quickly. The festival has an 11:00 PM curfew. Trust me, you will want a light hoodie or windbreaker tucked away in your bag for those evening headliners.

Finally, lock in your transport plan right now. Download the Metro TAP app, load some money onto it ahead of time, and plan to leave your car at home. Your wallet, your sanity, and your feet will thank you.
